Police discovered the artwork had been thrown into the canal in Newport on Sunday evening.

Officers posted pictures of the damage on Twitter.

Constable Lee Thomas said: "It is very sad, young children had put some time and effort into creating these pictures which I'm sure they very much enjoyed doing.

"Clearly the idea was to place their work in a very public place so that local residents and visitors could admire their efforts.

"The children will be very upset by what has happened to their work."
