The attack happened at about 3.30am yesterday as the victim made her way home from a night out in the town. The 26-year-old was walking alone on Hawkstone Avenue when she was attacked.

The attacker, who was part of a large gang, assaulted the woman as she made her way down an alley leading to Sandiford Crescent.

The woman suffered cuts to her face, which police described as minor injuries.

Investigating officer Pc Claire Walker-Shale, said: "Despite being very frightened by the sudden and unprovoked attack, the victim has been able to provide ourselves with quite a good description of her attacker, and also other persons present.

"The victim has suffered, thankfully, only minor injuries during the attack, even though she has been cut several times to the side of her body and her face with some kind of sharp implement after bravely punching her attacker in the face.

"I would ask anyone who saw a group of four or five males in dark clothing and hooded tops or heard a commotion taking place around the Sandiford Crescent or Hawkstone Avenue to get in touch.

"I would also appeal to those involved to hand themselves in to police now before we go knocking on their doors."
