Bishop Hooper Primary School, in Ashford Carbonel, was closed on Thursday, but reopened yesterday following essential work to make the site safe.

Construction contractor Thomas Vale have assessed the situation with the failed fixings on the wooden canopy structure, and on the advice of the structural engineer each external post supporting the veranda is now coupled with a structural support.

Further work will be required to be done at a later date, possibly during the May half term when the school, which has 80 pupils, is closed.

Dave Mann from Health and Safety visited the school to discuss matters with the headteacher and the decision was made for the school to fully open.

Headteacher Kerri Phelps said: "The good news is that we are all back in school as usual today with minimal disruption to pupils, parents and staff.

"We are now hoping we can get on with the important job of the teaching and learning of the children."
