Letter: Britain has given up much in the pursuit of EU conformity

For those of us who were around when we had the first referendum we were voting for a common market, we were lied to then and we are being lied to now.

David Cameron is preaching from the same book as Ted Heath in this matter. What we have lost to the EU to date as far as I can remember are the following:

We lost our monetary system, it went from LSD – or to the people who do not know what that was – pounds shillings and pence, we had to go decimal, but it was still called a pound.

Our temperature was changed to Centigrade from Fahrenheit and when I now see weather forecasts on the TV saying that it will be 20 Celsius it still does not make me feel warm.

Our weights and measures went from ounces, pounds, cwt and tons to kilograms and parts thereof, our liquid measure went from pints, quarts and gallons, to litres and parts thereof. We also changed our measurements from feet and inches to metres and kilometres.

All this was done for the sake of conformity and harmonisation, all this cost us a great deal of money, and I do not know of anything that was changed in the EU to benefit us.

Now to what we have left. We drive on the left hand side of the road, and we are the only country in the EU to do this, with the total population of the EU far exceeding ours. If we vote to stay in, just how long will it be before we have to conform to the EU and drive on the right hand side of the road? Can you even imagine the carnage when this is put into force? It will happen, along with the change of miles between destinations and of course the speed limits in kilometres per hour.

But that is one thing they cannot change and that is the hour. We might not be able to move it round like we do for winter and summer, but it will still be 60 seconds to a minute and 60 minutes to the hour.

Now, which country's car manufacturer was it that cheated on their car exhaust outputs just so that they could sell more of them? Germany. What else have they cheated on, as they rule the EU they can hide a lot of sins.

A lot of people will laugh at this, but a lot of the older people have been through all this and worse, and I bet they can remember when times were good though it might have been hard.
