Over 100 homes to be built for Telford & Wrekin Council

More than 100 homes will be built to increase Telford & Wrekin Council's number of private rental homes.

The council wants to build 92 homes on Matlock Avenue in Dawley and a further 24 in Hadley Centre.

The council started building about 130 homes in Madeley and Randlay last summer – 101 of them on the site of the former Woodlands Primary School in Madeley.

They have also dropped plans originally put forward to build on Wildwood at Woodside and Deercote at Hollinswood.

The changes have been made after a review of the sites by council officers.

The project is aimed at providing more housing at an affordable level for people living in the borough.

A report to be put to the council's cabinet on Thursday proposes updating the existing business plan for its company NuPlace, which manages the properties.

The first tenants moved into Pool View in Randlay on March 11, where all 31 private rented homes are let.

The same number of homes are already let in Woodland Walk in Madeley, though the new occupants are yet to move in.

A planning application has been submitted for the site in Dawley, and further applications are planned for a further 31 homes in Newport and 24 at the new site in Hadley.

Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for customer services, said he was pleased with progress which had been made so far.

He added: "It is great that we are already in a position with Nuplace where the first tenants are moving into phase one properties and plans for phase two are being fine tuned.

"Subject to the phase two sites successfully getting planning permission, I look forward to work starting on all four of those as Nuplace continues to generate income for the council, helps regenerates brownfield sites and creates high quality rental properties."

Councillor Richard Overton, the authority's cabinet member for housing, said: "Nuplace was established last summer as a commercial company set up to develop and manage a programme of 400 market rental properties.

"It has the aim of supporting social and economic regeneration, addressing a shortfall in providing quality homes in the rental market and generating revenue to protect frontline council services."
