Whitchurch primary school put in special measures by Ofsted

A Shropshire primary school has been placed into special measures and told it must improve following a damning inspection.

Tilstock Primary School, near Whitchurch, was rated 'inadequate' after a visit from Ofsted inspectors and will now be under regular checks from the government watchdog.

The report published after the visit in January found that the school has "declined" since its previous inspection in 2014 and that leaders, including the governors, have "failed to take action to halt the fall in standards".

Mary Hughes, lead inspector, said: "Not all the areas of improvement identified at the last inspection have been tackled successfully. Too many pupils do not achieve well enough because the quality of teaching is inadequate."

The school has been told it cannot appoint newly qualified teachers and will now be regularly assessed by inspectors.

The inspection found some positive aspects of life at the school. Pupils are safe and feel well cared for, they enjoy coming to school and their attendance is good. Ms Hughes said pupils behave well and that parents are positively involved in their children's learning.

However, all areas inspected were found to be rated 'inadequate' or 'requires improvement'.

Headteacher Julie Stuffins-Jones said that steps are already in place to improve.

Mrs Stuffins-Jones said: "We are already addressing the issues raised by the inspector. We are vigorously working on an action plan that will address the concerns of the inspector while at the same time promoting the good things that we are doing in school."
