Watch: Thanks for ramp but it's dangerous to use, say Newport residents

A ramp that gives disabled people access to a canal was today branded as "dangerous".

Residents in Newport who use the newly installed ramp near Fishers Lock claim it is "too steep" and raised concerns that it could result in those using it landing in the water.

The ramp was installed earlier this month after Councillor Adrian Meredith used his ward fund to pay for it.

The Telford & Wrekin councillor had been campaigning for the ramp for several years and it cost £2,500.

Telford & Wrekin Council said it was looking into the claims.

Mandy Bennett, a wheelchair user, said she was very excited to have the ramp installed as it meant she could access the canal path closer to her home.

But now the 49-year-old says she still has to go to the other side of town due to the new path being "unsafe".

She said: "The ramp is far too steep for me to use, and I don't have breaks on my wheelchair so I struggle to stop.

"I can't go down it by myself and I struggle to get back up the path. Even people with prams can't use it."

She added: "The ramp is a good idea and I agree with having one, but I just feel it has been rushed and because of that it's dangerous.

"We have been after this ramp for many years but I am worried it could cause someone to end up in the canal."

Leigh Denley, a personal trainer, has also raised concerns about the safety of the ramp.

Ms Denley, who helps resident Anthony Ellis, who uses crutches to walk, said: "It really has been a rushed job, as the ramp is too steep for people to use. Even the handrail is too low so if you struggle to walk you wouldn't be able to use it.

"It's such a shame as this is right by Anthony's house and he can't use it as it is not safe."

Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "We are in conversation with our contractor to establish what specifications were followed when installing the ramp and we will provide an update as soon as we are able."
