The accident has led to Monkmoor Road being closed at the junction with Crowmere Road.

Murray MacGregorm a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The woman, who is believed to be in her 30s, had just come out of the shop when the incident happened.

"Due to her 'disorientated' state, it was difficult to assess her condition, but she had clearly suffered a head injury.

"She was immobilised and, due to her condition, was anaesthetised at the scene before being airlifted to the major trauma centre at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

"The car driver was uninjured."
