Motorists will be hit with the closures on Granville Avenue in Newport from Monday.

The road will be closed to all traffic from the crossroads at the junction with Upper Bar and Station Road towards the nearby Ford car dealership.

Traffic will be diverted through Upper Bar, Stafford Street and Audley Avenue.

Only Co-op customers and residents will be able to use of Avenue Road.

Telford & Wrekin Council and the contractors have brought the repairs forward to take in the school half-term holiday.

The closure is anticipated to be in place for five weeks while National Grid carries out the work.

Constable Lee Thomas of West Mercia Police said: "This has the potential to cause major delays around what is a major route into and out of town for residents, commuters and those on the school run.

"Sadly, the council and the works contractors have been unable to accommodate the additional traffic management solutions we suggested in order to try and alleviate the problems.

"However, the council agreed to a request to bring the works forward by one week."
