People rescued from cars and flood defences up in wake of Storm Imogen

People had to be rescued from their cars, roads left closed and flood defences are up after Storm Imogen left flood water in its wake across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service reported that they had to help three people in the Welshpool area overnight who had become stuck in floodwater.

The flood barriers in Shrewsbury were put up by the Environment Agency yesterday, and are likely to remain in place today with River Severn levels peaking this afternoon.

This morning the Environment Agency's Dave Throup tweeted:

The Frankwell Riverside Short Stay Car Park is closed and the St Juian's Friars Car Park only has limited parking.

Although the worst of Storm Imogen is over, flood warnings remain in place across the region at the River Severn at Montford Bridge and Shrawardine, Pentre, the Quarry and Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury, and at the River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook and Melverley.

Flood alerts were today also in place at the River Severn Upper Teme, Lower Teme, and the Severn Vyrnwy Confluence.

The flood barriers in Shrewsbury were put back up again by the Environment Agency.

The Frankwell Riverside Short and Long Stay car parks were closed and parking at Julian St Friar Car Park was limited.

This afternoon the Environment Agency said it would decide in the morning if flood barriers need to go up in Ironbridge.

Trains between Newtown and Welshpool have also been affected by flooding on the line.
