The A49 was closed between Ludlow and Craven Arms following the accident between the bike and a blue Transit van near Bromfield.

The rider, a man in his 20s, suffered a number of injuries including a serious head injury in the collision, which took place at the junction with the B4365 for Culmington.

He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford for treatment following the accident, which happened at about 4.45pm yesterday afternoon.

The cyclist was conscious when he was taken to hospital, according to a police spokesman. It is believed the driver of the van was uninjured.

Chris Kowalik, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "The cyclist, a male in his 20s, suffered a number of injuries including a serious head injury. Two ambulances and a community paramedic attended. One of the ambulances took the cyclist to the Princess Royal Hospital."

At about the same time emergency services were called to the westbound exit slip road at junction 4 of the M54 at Shifnal.

Two cars were involved in the crash. One person suffered injuries not believed to be serious and was treated by paramedics.
