The petition, which now has 4,885 signatures, was launched after Elizabeth Mackie's kitten Mr Mistoffelees died after ingesting lily pollen. The petition was then launched by the owner's vets Leonard Brothers Veterinary Clinic in Whitchurch

People from across the world have now signed the petition and aired their views.

Áine Ryan, from Sheffield, posted : "Many people have no idea how dangerous lilies are to cats, and wouldn't expect flowers to be lethal. They need a warning on them."

Sanne De Beul, from Oelegem, Belgium, posted: "I want to avoid more cats needlessly dying because their humans are ignorant, and I also want to avoid more humans having to go through the deaths of their beloved felines just because they wanted a pretty flower."

Shondra Marie, from Houston, Texas, posted: "I believe this happened to one of our cats as well."

Wendy Mead, from Myrtleford in Australia, wrote: "All florists should make it part of their selling to ask if there are pets in the house the flowers are going to."

Vet Andy Nelson said: "I hope our petition raises awareness but I'm really hoping we can get the shops to put a sticker on lilies to ensure it doesn't happen anymore."
