Research by the RAC shows majority of people who avoid motorways simply don't need to use them but others don't have the confidence to drive on them.

Six per cent admitted they don't want to drive on motorways, while 12 per cent say they will get someone else to drive if they know their route includes a motorway, while 79 per cent said they never need to use a motorway where they live and drive.

There are just 2,300 miles of motorway spanning the country, against a total of 243,600 miles for the whole UK road network.

Of those who won't drive on motorways almost 70% says it's because of the speed of the traffic, half feel more at risk of being involved in an accident than on other roads; 42 per cent don't have the confidence to drive on a motorway and a third said they're just too boring and monotonous to use.

Hoever, the Department for Transport says motorways are statistically Britain's safest roads despite carrying around 21 per cent of all traffic.
