Shropshire village speed bumps to remain despite protests

Speed bumps on a stretch of a village road look set to stay, despite a 1,200-signature petition calling for them to be removed.

Residents in Shawbury have been calling for speed cushions to be removed from the 30mph stretch of Wem Road for months, as they believe they are not a suitable form of enforcement.

But following an investigation officers are recommending the retention of the speed cushions. They say a traffic survey indicated that vehicle speeds were in line with a self-enforcing 30mph speed limit.

The issue was today being discussed at a meeting of Shropshire Council's environment and services scrutiny committee.

A report put together by the council's project manager Richard Ayton said: "The cost of removing the speed cushions and replacing with other measures would be in the region of £10,000 to £20,000 depending on what measures were chosen and the funding of this would be at the expense of another capital project."

The speed cushions were installed last summer as part of the 30mph speed limit extension safety scheme.

The measures were developed following concerns about the safety of school children walking on Wem Road to get to Shawbury Primary School.

But residents said they were not properly consulted on the scheme.

Dymphna Gregory, who lives on the Mytton Road estate, said she hadn't known of any issues in 47 years of living in the village. She said: "

We don't mind the speed limit but we don't see the need for the speed cushions down there."

Today's meeting was taking place at 2pm in Shirehall, Shrewsbury.
