Two Shropshire schools below UK standard

Two Shropshire schools are among more than 300 falling below the Government's standards for secondaries, a report has revealed today.

The figures name Lakeside Academy, formerly the Lord Silkin School in Stirchley and now known as the Telford Park School, in the list along with Rhyn Park School, now known as St Martins, near Oswestry.

The Press Association figures have been compiled using the same method as the Department of Education uses to calculate under-performing schools, although the DfE does not publish a list of schools it considers below its benchmarks.

Lakeside Academy changed its name to Telford Park School last year after it was found to be one of four schools given the worst possible "inadequate" rating by Government inspectors and placed into special measures following inspections while under the management of Telford Co-operative Multi-Academy Trust.

Steven Carter, the executive head of school, said: "The school has moved into a brand new state of the art building with a completely new leadership team and staffing structure. Ofsted has already commented on the rapid improvements in the school since September and we expect significantly better results in summer 2016."

The head of St Martins School, Sue Lovecy, said the results of extensive school improvements and innovative provision had started to filter through, adding: "Visitors to school including a recent visit from the Department for Education are bowled over by our working environment, ethos and behaviour. We currently have a very small secondary cohort in our through school and this means our attainment results vary greatly from year to year."
