Shropshire Council is proposing to bring in a 20mph speed limit and raised crossings the new safety measures have been put forward for along Greyfriars Road, outside Coleham Primary School.

Claire Jones, headteacher of the school, said the road currently gets very busy with parents at peak times and the proposed measures were to safeguard pupils at drop-off and pick-up times.

She said: "It is basically road improvements to make the road, which is outside our school, really safe for children at busy drop-off and pick-up times," she said. "The plans include two raised crossings, a 20mph speed limit and minor alterations to waiting restrictions. It does get very busy at dropping off and picking up times.

"We have nearly 420 children at the school so traffic can get built up."

She added: "Hopefully it will be brought in later this year, but it is totally out of our control. And hopefully it will happen during our holiday time. I wrote to parents earlier this month about it but haven't had any comments either way yet. I'd imagine most people would be in favour of this, though."

She said there were plans to invite pupilsfrom the school to design artwork for the new 20mph signs.

One of the raised crossings would be outside the school and the other would be near the junction of Belle Vue Road.

Ms Jones added: "We are having a residents' meeting on Thursday and we are also having an event on Wednesday where two people from the council will be coming to discuss the project."

The proposals are available to view on the Shropshire Council website.

Parents will also be able to see the plan at the school during this week as part of an informal consultation led by Shropshire Council. Representatives from the council will be at the school today between 3pm and 4pm to discuss any comments with parents.

Residents will also have an opportunity to see the proposal and discuss it at the school with council officers tomorrow, on Thursday(JAN21) between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
