Watch: Bid to reverse bank closure plan in town

A bid to convince banking giant HSBC to reverse a decision to close its branch in Chirk will be "a challenge", a campaigner says.

Simon Baynes said there was a "positive" mood among people in Chirk who want to keep their under-threat HSBC bank.

He said despite the odds being stacked against them, campaigners "have got to try" to save their local branch.

Nearly 50 people attended a public meeting at Chirk Parish Hall last night that was organised by Mr Baynes, the Conservative Welsh Assembly candidate for Clwyd South.

HSBC announced last week that it will close its branch in Chirk – the last remaining bank in the town – on April 8.

Mr Baynes said: "It was a very positive meeting – I did a short introduction and then we basically just threw it open to the floor for people to have their say.

"We noted everything down and HSBC have agreed to meet with me, so when that happens I will make sure I raise those points with them."

When asked if he thought people power could reverse the decision of the bank, Mr Baynes said: "I think it would be great if we could, but I think it would be a challenge to achieve that.

"But we have got to try, and that was the feeling of everyone in the room."

"This closure will impact on everyone, particularly the elderly and the businesses in the town."

An online petition to keep the Chirk branch has already attracted hundreds of signatures.
