Landmark Bridgnorth car dealership site may become a health and fitness club

A landmark former car dealership in Bridgnorth could be turned into a health and fitness club in a £250,000 project.

The proposal is for the former Enterprise Garage, which was a VW dealership, in Hollybush Road.

The move could see 15 jobs created at the site which has been empty for a number of years since the garage closed.

The man behind the plan is David Heath, who currently runs the active4less health and fitness club in Wombourne.

Mr Heath, who lives in Wombourne, said: "I have always liked Bridgnorth, have visited here for years and see it as the ideal place for the new centre.

"We wanted to expand our current operation and this site in Bridgnorth seems perfect, as it is close enough to Wombourne without competing with it.

"Structurally the building is ideal for a health and fitness club and I have seen numerous other clubs who have used ex-car dealers."

Mr Heath added: "The layout of the building is just right for our purpose, with large windows and plenty of car park space all fitting into what we need." The new club would consist of a fitness suite, 50-bike spin studio, dance and aerobic studio, strength and conditioning area, functional training zone, boxing area, beauty rooms, treatment rooms, supplement shop and a small health café.

The club would also offer outdoor activities such as cycling and running clubs, as well as entering fitness events and holding social nights.

Mr Heath, 48, said that his club in Wombourne, which opened 13 years ago, has proved very successful and the idea is to create a very similar model but on a larger scale in Bridgnorth.

He said: "Both clubs will be renamed Active Gyms and will be run by myself and my daughter Georgie.

"We are a family-run company.

"Georgie manages the active4less club in Wombourne and my son Jake also works there."

"At the Bridgnorth club we would offer memberships at £24.95 per month on a no contract basis which will include classes, of which there will be over 50 per week.

"We would also look to offer joint-membership schemes so people could use both the Bridgnorth and Wombourne clubs.

"We are going to invest £250,000 and hope to create at least 15 full and part-time jobs.

"One of the reasons for choosing Bridgnorth for our next club was that I think there is a lack of facilities in the town and I believe people would benefit from this new club.

"If anybody wants more information we suggest calling in at active4less in Wombourne to see what will be coming to Bridgnorth."

The proposals for the new club can now be viewed on the Shropshire Council website.
