The Met Office issued a weather warning for strong winds while the Environment Agency issued flood warnings for the River Severn with more rain expected.

Wind speeds of up to 50 or 60mph were expected across the region today, with a warning that some gusts could cause disruption to travel in Shropshire.

A Met Offices spokesman said gales would sweep across the region from the coast, easing in the late afternoon. The winds will be accompanied by some rain, and there is even snow forecast for the north of the country.

The Environment Agency said river levels were rising at Severn/Vyrnwy confluence at Llanymynech and at Crew Green on the Severn, and warned that flooding could affect the Pentre to Melverley road near Royal Hill.

There are no warnings currently in place for Shrewsbury, Telford or Bridgnorth on the Severn. The river is not expected to peak until tomorrow at the earliest, and with more rain forecast, the levels could remain high until the end of the week.

Strong winds were already affecting the county with fence panels blown over and scaffolding on buildings having to be secured by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service yesterday.

A crew from Shrewsbury fire station was sent to Wilfred Owen Close in the town at 1.09pm yesterday.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said crews had secured a large number of scaffold boards which had come loose in high winds.

Lucy Allan, MP for Telford, took to Twitter saying how fence panels were being torn away in Dawley Bank yesterday.

She said: "Dawley Bank is being blown away – fences down, objects flying around, it's wild."

A fallen tree blocked the A49 south of Bayston Hill causing minor delays for motorists but it was quickly removed by police and the Environment Agency.
