The eastbound carriageway was closed between Junction 3 for Albrighton and Junction 2 for Wolverhampton, leaving many drivers trapped.

Steve Parry, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said two men have been taken to hospital.

He said: "The original cause has suggested a number of cars were involved, believed to be four in total.

"We have taken two patients. One man in his 50s had neck and back pain and has been taken to Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.

"A second man had a medical problem and felt unwell as a result of the incident. He was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital."

The smash at around 8am resulted in rush-hour delays on the A41 in Cosford, Albrighton and Oaken.
