Plan to build 500 homes near Telford branded 'a catastrophe'

Plans to build hundreds of homes, as well as a school, on a greenfield site near Telford were today branded a "catastrophe".

The scheme would see 500 homes on land south and east of Lubstree Park, Humber Lane, in Preston Upon The Weald Moors, north of Telford.

Gladman Developers submitted the plans to Telford & Wrekin Council including up to 35 per cent being affordable homes.

It would also see a community centre, a primary school, public open space, children's play area and sports pitches.

Councillor Andrew Eade, ward member for Church Aston and Lilleshall where the development would fall said he would be lobbying the council to reject the plans.

He said: "I think this application would be a complete catastrophe.

"Building houses on this land would be wrong, it is a green field site, and I have spoken to the developers about this. We do not need the extra houses in the area, we already have enough in the town. I will be speaking to the council and I will be lobbying them to reject the plans as we do not need these extra homes."

This comes after Redrow homes submitted its plans to build just under 300 homes on land in Newport, despite a huge backlash from residents.

The first application is for 110 homes on Plough Farm Nursery, in Plough Lane.

The second could see 170 homes built on land east of Kestrel Close and Beechfields Way and would mean demolishing two homes in Kestrel Close. However, this piece of land has been outlined in Telford & Wrekin's Local Plan as part of the authority's green network – a blueprint shaping future development in the borough.

Former guitarist of the band The Verve, Nick McCabe, who now lives in Beechfields Way in Newport, has expressed his objection to Redrow's plans by setting up a Facebook group asking people to lobby Redrow.

This comes after the final hurdle was cleared last week to build 111 homes on the Dairy Crest factory site in Crudgington.
