There were almost 300 entries of exotic and British birds of every kind including budgerigars, canaries and parrots at the weekend event.

Ellesmere and District Cage Bird Society Show, at the town hall, is described as one of the biggest and oldest in the region. As well as admiring the birds, members of the public were able to enjoy homemade refreshments.

Organiser Mr Bill Ralphs said the society had been in existence for well over 100 years.

"It was a very good show with some wonderful birds. One of our judges was bird artist Eric Peake, who was very complimentary about the quality of the birds that were being exhibited."

Mr Ralphs said he would like to see more young people getting involved in the world of exotic birds.

"We used to have a huge junior section but sadly young people don't seem to be interested any more and we have not been able to run any junior classes for the last two years.

"It seems all they want is to be on their computers. But is is a wonderful hobby to get involved in."

The society meets at Ellesmere Comrades Club on the last Monday of most months although Mr Ralphs said it was important to check the meeting was on.
