A tree blocked a Shrewsbury town centre road today after falling down near a bridge.

Motorists got caught up in long queues this morning after the tree fell, blocking the Kingsland Bridge and closing the road between Town Walls and Canonbury.

The toll bridge is privately owned by Kingsland Bridge Company.

Charlie Wilde, part time toll keeper for the Kingsland Bridge Company, said he was "thankful" nobody had been hurt.

He said: "Thankfully it happened overnight rather than during the day, so nobody was hurt and it didn't fall on a car, it just fell hitting the fence and there was only a small level of damage from that. It only damaged the ironwork."

Mr Wilde said Shropshire Council had initially placed road closure signs up as well as a bollard and tape around where the tree had fallen before moving it.

Shropshire Council worked with Shrewsbury Town Council and Kingsland Bridge Company.

Workers clearing the road

The tree was cut up and cleared from the site before 10.30am.
