Tanker causes traffic 'havoc' in Oswestry after getting stuck in manhole

A tanker blocked one of the main roads into Oswestry this morning after getting stuck in a manhole as it tried to manoeuvre into a turning.

Whittington Road was blocked from shortly after 8am after the tanker, carrying 10 tonnes of electrical oil, tried to reverse into the power substation near the junction with the A5.

CSO Andy Neeves from Oswestry Police said: "It tried to reverse into the site and the front passenger side wheel has broken through the concrete cover of the BT manhole and sunk it to the floor so it can't move.

"It caused havoc with the traffic, especially as the primary school is right next to it and people want to go straight onto the A5. It's only a short diversion, but the increase in traffic at the Whittington Road/Gobowen Road junction was a nightmare."

A specialist recovery truck was sent out from Automechanical in Telford to help remove the tanker.

There were no reported injuries and the road was reopened by 10.30am.
