Rolling hills emerge from the mist for Star Witness winner

With the rolling hills and rising mist – from this picture you can see why Shropshire was the inspiration for Middle Earth in Tolkein's Lord of the Rings.

The image is actually of the Long Mynd, snapped by Star Witness winner Jonathan Kimber.

The snapper from Cantlop, just outside Condover near Shrewsbury, took the picture on a particularly frosty morning and it has now come to have a sentimental value to him. The picture was taken on a day out with his father John, before he died. Mr Kimber said: "My dad was a retired weather forecaster. It was really foggy out and he said, let's go higher up and it will be a nice day.

"When we got to the top we could see this sight. I think on that day it was a bit frosty."

Mr Kimber, who works for Hexagon Meteorology in Telford is a keen photographer, but prefers to look even higher for his usual subjects.

He said: "I like to take pictures of the night sky, comets, the northern lights. Because of our rural location it is a great place to take shots like that."

He wins £100 as our September winner of Star Witness.
