Montgomeryshire AM Russell George will appear on an episode of The Gadget Show on Channel 5, to discuss the lack of signal in Newtown.

Mr George said scores of residents have contacted him about progressively worse mobile connection in the town and he plans to meet with EE and 3 in mid-November for talks. He said he was still waiting for a response from Vodafone and O2.

It comes after North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson accused mobile phones bosses of putting lives at risk by not improving reception in rural parts of the county.

His stance has been backed by Ryan Pugh, an agricultural building contractor who became trapped under a mini-digger in south Shropshire for three hours and couldn't raise the alarm because he had no signal on his phone.

Mr George said: "I was contacted by the Gadget Show for a feature they want to do about the issue of phone signal in Newtown.

"Many areas of Mid Wales have poor signal and for most of those areas it has always been very poor.

"But in Newtown there was once very good signal, but it is is getting progressively worse as mobile phone providers decide to share masts."

Mr George said he did not know when the feature would be shown on the television, but said he hopes the publicity will result in action being taken.
