Fire crews were called at about 2.20am this morning after a fire involving large pan left on cooker in kitchen set alight on Sundorne Road.

An alarm was raised by a neighbour who called 999 after being woken up by a fire alarm.

Russ Hales, manager at Shrewsbury Fire Station, attended the incident and said it illustrated the importance of smoke alarms.

He said: "Fortunately the property involved had smoke alarms. The individual who was in the property did the classic of putting food in a pan on the hob and I understand had dozed off.

"The property had filled with smoke and the message from this is if the smoke alarm doesn't rouse you then it will rouse a neighbour who was then able to call the emergency services.

"Obviously working smoke alarms are what we want in every property and if they don't rouse you then they will rouse a neighbour.

"The key message is to get smoke alarms, make sure they are working and you will get out of your property much sooner."

Following the incident the man was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to be checked over.

Mr Hales said: "In this particular instance he was roused by the breathing apparatus team that went in. They took him out and he was checked over by paramedics before being taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation."
