Boy, 12, killed falling from rope swing near Shropshire border is named

A 12-year-old boy who died close to the Pontcysyllte aqueduct is believed to have fallen from a rope swing.

Ethan Rainey, from Trevor, near Llangollen, was a keen sportsman and a pupil at Dinas Bran School.

It is thought he had been playing on the rope swing with friends when the tragedy happened.

One friend took to social media to say he had tried to save Ethan.

Police investigating the death say they are not treating it as suspicious and say their thoughts are with his family and friends.

Officers and other emergency services were called to the aqueduct in Pontcysyllte just after 5pm on Wednesday.

Ethan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Neil Harrison said he was believed to have fallen while on a rope swing.

He said: "This is a terribly sad incident and our thoughts are with the boy's family and friends.

"Although the death is not being treated as suspicious, North Wales Police are investigating and enquiries will continue on behalf of the coroner. Trained family liaison officers are providing support to the family.

"We ask that the press and media respect the privacy of the boy's family at this extremely sad time."

Ethan, who called himself Freckles on his facebook page, was a year eight pupil at Dinas Bran School in Llangollen.

A spokesman for the school said: "The school was very shocked and saddened to hear of Ethan's death and would like to express its sincere condolences to the family. Our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.

"Ethan was a very happy, bubbly and kind year eight student who had many friends. He was a keen sportsman who represented the school at football and attended conscientiously. He will be sadly missed by at the school.

"We are working with Denbighshire County Council to provide support for pupils and teachers."

Flowers were laid at the scene of the accident and dozens of people left messages on Ethan's facebook page.

One said: "R.I.P bro I tried to save you."

The historic aqueduct, a Unesco world heritage site, was to have been illuminated tonight as part of a nationwide celebration. But the plans were cancelled as a mark of respect to the Ethan's family.
