Copthorne Barracks has been marketed by chartered surveyors JLL on the instruction of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, although no sale price has ever been published, with those interested encouraged to submit bids.

The deadline for offers closed on September 23, and a spokesman for the DIO said they would now produce a shortlist and decide upon which was the best offer.

Nicole Herlihy, of the DIO, said: "Interest has been very good with a range of proposals for the site and its future. With our agents JLL, we will now consider the offers."

The 16-acre site had been marketed as a freehold residential and mixed use development opportunity and included a range of buildings, with living accommodation and sports facilities.

Councillor Anne Chebsey, who represents the Porthill ward which includes the barracks on Shrewsbury Town Council, said residents were open minded about the prospects of development but would be concerned about the impact on traffic.

She said: "The general feeling the way things are going is that someone will look at it for housing.

"I think people would have major concerns about the increase in traffic."

She said that no matter who buys the site, any plans will require planning consent, giving the public their chance to have a say. She added: "I think people are very open minded here about what might be put on the site. Obviously whatever is decided it will have to go through the planning process and that will give local people the opportunity to raise any concerns."
