In a statement, she said she had decided to leave for personal reasons.

It comes after representatives of public services union Unison called for staff to be given an explanation for why Mrs Farrington Chadd had resigned with immediate effect on Monday.

Mrs Farrington Chadd said she had decided to speak out to end "speculation" over her departure.

She said: "After eight years at RJAH, I felt the time was right for me to look for a new challenge. This was not a decision I have taken lightly. I am proud of everything that the trust has achieved during my time as its CEOand am sure that it will continue to go from strength to strength."

Arron Jones, Unison representative of staff at the orthopaedic hospital, said staff deserved to know why Mrs Farrington Chadd had stepped down.

John Grinnell, the trust's director of finance, has taken up the post of acting chief executive officer while the hospital begins the recruitment of a permanent replacement.

The trust will not comment further.
