A £700,000 scheme to improve the Gledrid traffic island, north of Oswestry, was due to begin this month.

But Highways England now says it won't start until the next financial year.

It says that during the design work for the project it was discovered that more essential work was needed.

The five exit roundabout carries both the A5 and A483 trunk roads as well as the roads into Weston Rhyn, Chirk and St Martins.

Engineers planned to widen the trunk road approaches and exits, construct footpaths, resurface the roadways and change signing.

The three-month work programme would have have been carried out with road closures overnight and was due to finish by Christmas.

Now it won't start until at least April next year.

A Highways England spokesman said: 'During the detailed design, we came across some further essential work which needs to be incorporated into the construction programme, and unfortunately this means that we have had to delay the scheme until the next financial year.

"We will provide further details closer to the time and we will work as quickly as possible to complete the scheme and deliver these benefits to local people."

It comes a £8.4 million project to remodel the Emstrey and Preston Boats islands on the A5 on the outskirts of Shrewsbury was completed at the start of the year months behind schedule.

Drivers initially criticised the new layout, but nearby businesses welcomed the completion of the work.
