Companies are expected to be invited to submit tenders for the new CCTV system in the next two months, with the funding for the revamp being provided by West Mercia's police and crime commissioner, Bill Longmore.

The leader of Shrewsbury Town Council, Alan Mosley, has welcomed the move, saying: "I think it is a good opportunity to ensure we have the best possible equipment that has the best possible coverage and that it represents value for money in maintenance and operations."

Councillor Mosley also said it was vital to improve the current system.

He said: "It is a very important facility and we need to make sure it is as good as possible to get people's confidence and to make our streets as safe as possible."

Helen Ball, clerk of Shrewsbury Town Council, said the system could also be used to assist businesses.

She said: "There are big plans to look at how we can develop a system that is more future-proofed and less of a drain on the public purse. Could you link it to car parks to help manage car parking facilities? Could you use it in conjunction with wayfinding boards in the town? Could they count footfall in the town?"
