Shropshire's late, late summer show

Welcome to the summer – albeit a little late. After a miserable few weeks of chilly winds and showers, warm sunshine has descended on Shropshire and Mid Wales.

A large area of high pressure is centred right over our region. Had it arrived a few weeks ago, we could be looking forward to soaring temperatures.

But, with autumn around the corner, we will instead experience misty mornings, hazy afternoons and clear crisp evenings.

Temperatures will this weekend reach 19C (66F) 7C (45F) – and the good conditions will continue right into next week.

That means plenty of material for Shropshire Star reader Jim Roberts, from Shrewsbury, who took this stunning early morning image of the autumn sun rising above a misty River Severn.

And it is also great news for attractions who rely on good weekend weather, including today's big family bike ride at Telford Town Park and harvest festival at Attingham Park. Television cameras were also due to be in the county, with BBC antiques show Bargain Hunt being filmed at Oswestry Showground.

Laura Young, from the Met Office, said: "As with any season there is a transitional phase.

"Certainly it can be quite settled but it can also be quite volatile in September, it all depends."

Meanwhile Ladbrokes say it is highly likely 2015 will be declared the wettest on record. The bookies say there is a 6/5 chance this year goes down in history as the wettest yet.
