More than 500 motorists have been caught speeding on a busy road in Telford in the space of six months, it has been revealed.

More than half of all vehicles using Colliers Way near the town centre are driving in excess of the 30mph speed limit, according to the Safer Roads Partnership.

Officials have pledged to continue to monitor the road using a speed camera van, which has been used over the summer months.

In total 522 motorists were captured driving too fast between February and July, according to figures released by West Mercia Police.

Four out of five of the drivers caught breaking the speed limit on Colliers Way were from the Telford area.

Of those, more than 60 per cent were from the Dawley, Malinslee, Lawley and Overdale areas.

There are no figures for the amount of people charged and fined.

When the camera was first introduced the figures show that about 15 per cent of vehicles were travelling above the speed limit at an average of 36.9mph.

Although the number of vehicles travelling above the 30mph speed limit has reduced in those months, the partnership has ruled there is still a speeding issue and the van will remain in action.

Anna Higgins, communications manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said: "The Safer Roads Partnership is still enforcing the speed limit on Colliers Way, in direct response to local community concern.

"Speed data is collected while sites are in operation to assess their impact upon traffic speed and driver behaviour.

"If speeds have reduced, we come out of the area. If not, we will stay there.

"In Colliers Way, more than half of all vehicles are still exceeding the speed limit and data suggests that 80 per cent of offenders are from Telford & Wrekin, and 61 per cent of those are from the Dawley, Malinslee, Lawley and Overdale areas.

"We will continue to target this road with our speed enforcement vehicles in a bid to bring speeds down.

"Police community support officers from Telford will also support this activity with visible speed enforcement and surveys.

"We hope that this additional presence will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and drive at a lower, safer speed.

"This will help to improve the quality of life for people living in both areas, reduce the risk of harm, and improve the safety of the roads for all those who use them," she said.

The Safer Roads Partnership is part of Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police.

It works with partner agencies to reduce casualties and make the roads safer across Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, Warwickshire and Worcestershire through targeted communication, education and training together with enforcement.
