The home improvement chain said it is looking to open a store in the town, but said no site had been confirmed.

However, the company has made a planning application to Newtown Town Council to open the branch in a former Bradley's Grage site in Pool Road.

It is believed the new store will create 12 jobs, but the company said it could not confirm the figure.

Jenny Harrison, firm spokeswoman, said: "We can confirm that Screwfix is looking to open a new store in Newtown, although no sites have been confirmed.

"More details will follow as soon as possible to keep the local community up-to-date."
