Police detained the man at the Welcome Break services at Junction 4 of the M54, near Shifnal, after being called by staff in the early hours of Saturday.

The man was passed on to immigration officials working for the Home Office but a spokesman today was unable to comment on the case.

It is not known how the man made his way to Shropshire.

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said: "The incident was logged at 2.18am.

"He handed himself in. He told staff that he was an asylum seeker, the police were called and he was taken into custody."

Staff working at the service station on the day said they were warned by police to be on the look-out for further migrants but, as yet, no further arrests have been made since.

No specific legislation or instruction has been handed out to service stations to be more vigilant in the wake of the European migrant crisis.

Local haulage firms say they are changing the way they work in a bid to safeguard themselves as the issue continues.

Earlier this year Telford-based haulier MAC, stopped travelling to France as a result of the problems in Calais.

The news comes as European leaders meet in an attempt to solve a dispute over how to relocate the 120,000 asylum seekers who have already arrived in Europe.

Around 500,000 migrants are believed to have arrived on the continent by sea in recent months.

In August, six suspected illegal immigrants were arrested from a refrigerated lorry in Walsall.

Police were called to Brockhurst Crescent, Delves, and detained three Vietnamese and three Iranian nationals, who were arrested on suspicion of being in the country illegally.

Last month in Cobham, Surrey, 28 people were arrested after being found in a lorry at a service station.

The driver of the vehicle was also arrested after the discovery was made at Cobham services on the M25.
