Almost full skeleton recovered by M54 in Shropshire, police reveal

Police have now recovered "almost" a complete skeleton from an area near a motorway slip road in Telford - but admit they are still no nearer to identifying who it is.

A skull was initially found at junction 4 of the M54 for Telford and Shifnal last month and further searches since have uncovered more remains.

But police have revealed a second post-mortem carried out last week has proved inconclusive and the cause of death remains unascertained "at this time".

The first post-mortem also failed to shed any light on the identity of the remains and how they came to be there.

Sarah-Jane Lynch, spokeswoman for West Mercia Police, said: "Following the discovery of human remains at Junction 4 of the M54 eastbound last month, further forensic enquiries are continuing.

"Earlier this month, further searches took place at the site. This resulted in further remains being uncovered.

"A further post mortem examination was carried out on Wednesday, however the results were inconclusive and the cause of death remains unascertained at this time.

"The initial remains were found on August 20. Following the second search of the area, almost a complete skeleton has now been recovered.

"It was established that the remains were that of an unknown male and were likely to have been at the scene in excess of two years. This continues to be investigated as an unexplained death.

"Police are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry including examining dental records.

"Investigators are being supported by the National Crime Agency, the UK Missing Persons Database and colleagues from other forces. Forensic Anthropologists and other forensic experts are also involved in establishing who this person may be.

"Further updates will be provided when more details are available."
