People in Telford say they are living with a rat problem after rubbish was dumped near their homes.

The excess litter has since been cleaned up from Dalford Court in Hollinswood by council workmen and Wrekin Housing Trust, but residents say the rats have remained.

Resident Nigel Toffanin said he had been told the housing trust would be laying rat traps, but claimed nothing had been done.

He said the problem was first reported a month ago but despite removing the rubbish the rats were still being spotted near people's homes.

He said: "Rubbish is being left outside and has attracted the rats. There are also dirty nappies being left under the bins, which are not being swept up. The first time we reported it was two months ago and the rubbish was removed, but we've been on at the council and housing trust for about three weeks about the rat problem.

"We don't think it's right and my neighbours have also seen rats in their gardens, with one even walking past a kitchen window."

Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said the council and housing trust was aware of the situation.

He said: "We can confirm we received a complaint on August 17. We are working closely with Wrekin Housing Trust and have been out to Dalford Court to assess the situation.

"Some excess rubbish was left in the area, outside some of the properties, but has since been removed."
