It's hardly the most comfortable headwear, but it might just save your life.

History enthusiasts went to battle at a re-enactment day in Shropshire.

And although they were play acting, those taking part were glad of the armour and chain mail.

In fact, such was the ferocity of the fighting that the event at Ludlow Castle ended with blood being spilled and the need for stitches to some who had come off worse.

The Battle Heritage medieval day formed part of the full contact championship battles, which now take place throughout Europe.

Castle custodian Sonja Belchere said: "Six counties battled it out and in the end Wessex were crowned champions of the Heritage Cup.

"There were injuries including stitches and lots of blood but there were no broken bones to worry about."

The Knights of Battle Heritage put on the show as part of a competitive series of fights that ends with the lifting of the cup.

It is the second time the group has fought at Ludlow Castle after being brought to the attraction by Ms Belchere, who took over as custodian three years ago.

She said: "Interest in the Heritage Cup has really grown. The first event was held here last year and audiences have grow by a third since then.

"The fight is to win the prestigious Heritage Cup regardless of the great British summer and everything is full contact."

The Knights of Battle Heritage group performs across Europe, representing England in events in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Poland.
