Fish Street and St Alkmund's Place will close for some of the work, which will see old metal pipes in the Pride Hill area taken out and a new main pipe made from hard-wearing plastic put in.

Work will start on September 7 and is expected to last 10 weeks.

Contractors will also carry out repairs in Fish Street, Butcher Row, Church Street and St Alkmund's Place.

A spokesman for National Grid said Fish Street will close for one month from September 7 and St Alkmund's Place will also close during September.

Closures are also planned for a period from mid-September to the beginning of October and a possible footpath closure in Butcher Row from mid-September until November.

The dates for these closures are yet to be confirmed.

The spokesman said: "The pipe will last for several generations and will need little or no maintenance, meaning future disruption from roadworks will be greatly reduced.

"We know that some of the work National Grid has to carry out to replace the gas mains creates disruption and inconvenience, especially in popular town centres and we are always looking for ways to minimise these problems."

The spokesman added: "We ask shoppers and motorists to bear with us while we carry out this work which will help to make sure the residents and businesses in this area continue to enjoy a safe and reliable gas supply."
