Letter: How can two big political donors decide the course of democracy?

Who is going to run Britain? It is a matter of fact that the SNP exercised  influence on the results of the general election with its run of victories in Scotland.

This was in no small part due to the donations of Colin and Chris Weir; Euro lottery winners who donated £3 million to the SNP in addition to the £3.5 million supporting the "Yes Scotland" Independence campaign.

To put this in perspective the population of Scotland is 5.295 million and the rest of the UK is 58.805 million. So if we were to spend the same amount per head for the rest of the country as the Weirs donated to Scotland we would require £33.310m.

In early 2015 in the run up to the election all political parties received £30 million in total, and in all of 2014 the Conservatives were top with £29 million.

However £1 million spent on advertising in Scotland is not the same as £1 million in the rest of the country because the cost per thousand of impacts is very much lower in Scotland.

I would imagine that without the Weirs the overall result may have been very different. Maybe if the Conservatives had not got an overall majority Mr Miliband would have, after much agonising, done the deal with the SNP that he was so strongly opposed to prior to the election?

Fair play to Chris and Colin they sound good sorts but one has to say that the future of the country was probably not democratically decided by the population as a whole yet we trundle democracy around the world as the best solution for various under-developed countries and if they don't want it we will fire missiles from submarines at them until they do!

The fact of the matter is that the Arab Spring and a few other disasters has shown us that democracy needs a good shake up.

What we need in Parliament is a devil's advocate and as such I think Jeremy Corbyn would make a great one.

Jeremy sounds like the sort of man who would cut to the chase. I would love to see him as opposition leader provided it went no further than that. He might make a great tour guide but I would not give him the keys to the coach.
