A sign has appeared outside a cafe in the town where April Jones was abducted and killed urging people to eat cake to avoid kidnap.

The sign outside Chimes cafe in Machynlleth reads: "The more you weigh, the harder you are to kidnap! Stay safe. Eat cake!! @Chimes".

Five-year-old April was abducted and murdered in 2012 near her home, leading to the biggest search in UK history. The appearance of the sign prompted some criticism on social media.

Angharad Penrhyn, who posted the picture of the sign on Twitter, added the comment: "In view of #AprilJones, shocking."

But town councillor Gareth Jones, who was heavily involved in the search for April as mayor at the time, said he could see nothing wrong with the sign.

He said: "Had I seen that sign it would not have made me think what other people have thought. Knowing the proprietor of the cafe, there is no way she would have done something of such an insensitive nature."

Mark Bridger, 47, was jailed for life after he was found guilty of abducting and murdering April. Her body has never been found.

The owner of Chimes has not commented.
