The four 15-minute lectures will be delivered by academics from University Centres Shrewsbury at the free event, which will take place on September 3 at Rowley's House in the town's West End.

Officials at the university say research, learning and teaching are tailored to local, regional and national needs, spanning four areas. They are medicine and health, sustainable business and community development, societal innovation, and design, heritage and the built environment.

Each lecture will be followed by an opportunity to put questions to the speakers.

Paul Kirkbright, University Centre Shrewsbury deputy provost, said: "We'd urge people to come along to the evening of taster lectures, to find out more about the learning and research taking place at University Centre Shrewsbury.

"The curriculum, research and partnerships aim to have as much of a positive impact as possible locally, regionally, nationally and internationally, helping Shropshire become a focus for research across a range of economic, environmental and other challenges facing society in the 21st century.

"The evening is part of a series of open events and activities which provide the opportunity to share more about our work and for people across the community to get involved in university centre life.

"The event is free and open to anyone, whether a college or university student, a residentwho is keen to gain an oversight or an individual with a passion for sports medicine and health, psychology, business or history."

The lecturers will be Dr Sam Roberts on Darwin's Legacy: Evolutionary Psychology and the Social Brain, and Professor John Buckley on Physical Activity and Sport in History, Health, Business and Culture.

Professor Clare Schofield will talk on Exploring the Future of Business Education: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders and Entrepreneurs, and Professor Tim Jenkins on A Future for Our Past: The Historic Environment in the 21st century.

The evening will run from 6.30pm to 8.15pm. Light refreshments will be provided and places can be booked at tasterlectures.eventbrite.co.uk
