Plans for a development on the corner of Redhill Way and the A5, near to Priorslee and St Georges, have been submitted to Telford &Wrekin Council.

It comes after council chiefs unveiled Telford & Wrekin Council's draft Local Plan — a blueprint reducing the number of homes built in the borough in future years— and decades spent fighting by campaigners in a bid to protect open space near their homes.

The latest application, which is not part of the sites allocated within the plan, includes room for up to 450 homes, retail development of up to 600 sq.m and a public house of up to 800 sq.m.

They were submitted by Barton Willmore on behalf of the developer, who remains unknown, and are currently under consultation. But the proposals have already attracted criticism from local councillors.

Councillor Thomas Hoof, of St Georges & Priorslee Parish Council, said the open space between St George's and Priorslee had become less and less over the years due to developments.

He said: "I am completely against it. There used to be a green block of land between St Georges and Priorslee and that's getting closer together. It is getting rid of the historical villages and there will not be enough school places for the extra people it would bring to the area."

Ian Gilbert, senior planner with Barton Willmore, said: "Barton Willmore, on behalf of Metacre Ltd, have submitted an application for up to 450 homes as well as an element of retail and a new public house on land at the edge of Telford.

"Telford is considered to be a growth area for the District and one of the main areas where the Council will meet its housing needs. We have been discussing the development of the site with the Council for some two years and we're pleased to bring forward a high quality development in a sustainable location to help meet the housing needs of the District."
