An MP has backed calls for part of a town's controversial one-way system to be returned to two-way traffic.

Glyn Davies, Montgomeryshire's Conservative MP has been a long-time critic of the Welshpool traffic management system – describing it as a "bonkers" answer to the management of traffic moving east-west through the town.

He is now backing demands from Welshpool Town Council for action.

Mr Davies said this week he was fully in support of the council's recent decision to seek fundamental change by having two roads taking traffic travelling westwards.

But he also wants to go a step further and pedestrianise the town's Church Street.

Mr Davies, who has lived near Welshpool all his life, said: "I do not think Welshpool's one-way-system is fit for purpose. It only works well when there is light traffic.

"Confining all westwards moving traffic to Broad Street is never going to cope in busy periods. The town council is absolutely right to seek substantial change by allowing westwards moving traffic to use the 'Back Road' – Brook Street and Union Street – as well.

"The Welshpool Town Council proposal is a major step forward towards creation of a workable traffic system for the town, serving both local and through traffic. I'm very pleased to offer my full support – even if I do personally still believe the very best answer is to go further and pedestrianise Church Street, making Broad Street two-way.

"The next step will be to persuade the Welsh Government to appoint traffic management consultants to take forward the Town Council's proposals. I will also write to the Welsh Government in support".
