Shrewsbury housing plan sparks fears over road safety

Detailed plans for a housing estate on Shrewsbury's Longden Road have led to safety concerns.

Campaigners who lost a battle to stop developers building on the site close to the Nuffield Hospital say the plans include no improvements to the unclassified road.

They want to see the existing pavement widened and a new one built on the other side of the road.

And they are also calling for the design of the new estate to be altered, taking it further back from the road.

A meeting of residents was held this week following the publication of the detailed planning application from developer WYRO.

The company already has outline permission for up to 175 homes.

Spokesman, Mrs Gwen Kelsey, who lives on the Longden Road, said the plans showed that the houses would be build right up to the road.

"It is an unclassified road yet it has a hospital, two schools, an ambulance station and a business park on it," she said.

"Longden Road and Mousecroft Lane and increasingly Nobold Lane are also used as rat runs and a lot of lorries use the road.

"When the houses are built there will be a lot of families and children walking to school along the road."

Mrs Kelsey said that despite the traffic the only road improvements planned as part of the development were to the traffic island at the junction of Roman Road.

"We want to see a least the existing footpath widening and a footpath built on the other side of the road."

She also said the residents were calling for the design of the estate to change.

"There could come a time in the future when money could be available to improve the road itself. If the houses are built up to to road that could not happen."

Mrs Kelsey said that there were also worries over an appeal put in by Morris Homes against the refusal of planning permission for about 150 homes further along the road.

People have 21 days in which to object to the detailed planning application.
