Fake banknotes have resurfaced in Newport, police have warned.

Traders and shoppers have been warned to lookout for counterfeit £10, £20 and £50 notes that have been used around the town in recent weeks.

Constable Lee Thomas, of West Mercia Police's safer neighbourhood team for Newport and Donnington, said: "We have started to hear of an increase again in the use of fake banknotes in the town.

"We would ask traders to check carefully any banknotes that they are concerned about, as we are starting to see an increase of fakes. Shop staff should be especially alert when people make very small value purchases yet pay with a high denomination note."

Anyone with information about fake bank notes, or if one is found, contact police on 101. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously via Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
