Shropshire road closures as two killed in motorbike crash on A5

[gallery] Two men were killed when the motorbikes they were riding collided on the A5 today. The accident happened near Gailey in Staffordshire, leading to traffic disruption futher along the A5 and on the A41 in Shropshire.

Around seven miles of the A5 was closed between Weston-under-Lizard and Gailey. It is likely the road will be closed for some time.

Emergency services were called to the crash on the A5 towards Telford, about one mile from Gailey Island, shortly after 10am.

A red BMW motorcycle and a white and blue Suzuki motorcycle were involved and both riders were pronounced dead at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find two motorbikes that had been in collision.

"Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save either of the two motorcyclists, both men, and they were confirmed dead at the scene.

"A third patient, a woman who was in a van nearby and witnessed the incident, was treated for symptoms of shock, before being discharged at the scene."

Staffordshire Police spokeswoman Faye Casey said: "Specially trained officers are now supporting the families of the two men, although they have yet to be formally identified.

"The A5 remains closed between Weston-under-Lizard and Gailey, approximately a seven-mile stretch, whilst a detailed examination of the scene takes place. This includes utilising the force helicopter to take aerial photographs.

"The A41 has also been closed to stop vehicles joining the A5."

HGV drivers are continuing to be advised to avoid the area completely as their vehicles are unsuitable for nearby country lanes.

The crash comes less than a month after a mother and daughter from Market Drayton were killed and seven others injured in a five-vehicle crash on the A5 near Weston Park.
