Highways England has announced that 10 miles of "essential work" to resurface both carriageways and all roundabouts between the A5 Dobbies Roundabout at Bayston Hill and Montford Bridge will start on Monday and is not planned to be completed by November 2015.

Road markings will also be renewed and new reflective road studs will be installed at the same time.

The work will cost over £3 million and will start on Monday with the resurfacing of the Churncote Roundabout to Montford Bridge.

Deborah Makinde, route sponsor at Highways England, said: "Once we've completed this work, drivers will be able to experience much smoother drives on this busy section of road, improving their driving experience well into the future and ensuring safer and more reliable journeys.

The scheme will be carried out through 15 seperate phases as listed below:

Phase 1 – Resurface A5 westbound and eastbound carriageways from Churncote Roundabout to Montford Bridge.

Phase 2 – Resurface Churncote Roundabout Eastbound

Phase 3 – resurface Churncote Roundabout Westbound

Phase 4 – Resurface A5 eastbound carriageway from Churncote Roundabout to Woodcote Roundabout.

Phase 5 – Resurface A5 westbound carriageway from Churncote Roundabout to Woodcote Roundabout

Phase 6 – Resurface Woodcote Roundabout Eastbound

Phase 7 – Resurface Woodcote Roundabout Westbound

Phase 8 – Resurface A5 eastbound carriageway from Woodcote Roundabout to Edgebold Roundabout.

Phase 9 – Resurface A5 westbound carriageway from Woodcote Roundabout to Edgebold Roundabout

Phase 10– Resurface Edgebold Roundabout Eastbound

Phase 11 – Resurface Edgebold Roundabout Westbound

Phase 12 – Resurface A5 eastbound carriageway from Edgebold Roundabout to Dobbies Roundabout.

Phase 13 – Resurface A5 westbound carriageway from Edgebold Roundabout to Dobbies Roundabout.

Phase 14 – Resurface Dobbies Roundabout Eastbound

"We understand that there has been a lot of activity around Shrewsbury recently, but this short-term work will reap long-term benefits for the area," siad Mrs Makinde.

"We have planned our work to keep disruptions to road users to a minimum, but there will be some night-time diversions. We thank drivers for their patience while we carry out this work."

All work will take place during the night and has been carefully planned in 15 phases to minimise any disruption that the work may cause.

  • Diversions will be clearly signposted and more information has been published on the project pages of the Highways England website, including the phases in which the work will be carried out.
