June Breese, who lives in Shropshire, was on holiday in Swansea when a cow ran at her and threw her up in the air twice before dropping her on the ground.

The 55-year-old was airlifted to hospital after she managed to crawl under a fence to get away from the animal.

She was left with broken ribs, a punctured lung and bruises all over her body.

June had been walking her dogs Tess and Dotty near Oxwich Castle when she came across an open field, where a cow and her calf were grazing. She passed the animals, but says the cow suddenly attacked.

June said: "I saw the cow and her calf some distance away from me, so I gave them a wide berth. Normally, cows move away as you approach them, but she didn't seem to move. So I stopped, and she began to move forward.

"I let the dogs go, hoping she might chase them, but she didn't.

"She ran at me and lifted me into the air. I just felt a thud. All I saw when I was on the ground was black.

"I got up in a daze, and she did it again. By this time, she had taken me over to the other side of the field, so I found a bit of fence to crawl under to get away.

"I thought I was going to die. I might have died, actually, because my heart rate went over 100 and I had internal bleeding."

After the attack, June attempted to make her way back to the castle to get some help, and fortunately, she ran into two off-duty police officers.

She said: "It was miraculous. If I'd had to walk all the way back, which was a good couple of miles, I wouldn't have made it.

"They didn't have mobile phones, so they went back to some people who had been walking behind them who happened to be off-duty doctors or student doctors

"They called me an ambulance, and stayed until it arrived.

"Everyone here has been amazing – the police, doctors and coastguard who looked after my dogs, so I want to say thank you to them all."

Mrs Breese was airlifted from the scene by the Wales Air Ambulance due to the location and the severity of her injuries.

She is now calling for signs to be put up in the area warning of the cows.

Mrs Breese, who left Morriston Hospital on Wednesday after six days, added: "It will be a painful recovery, but I'll get there.

"Some of my friends were laughing and saying, 'Only you could fall out with a cow'."
